Medical Education in Mumbai

Mumbai, the centre for quality medical care is not only famous in whole India, but also in the whole of South Asia. Mumbai is a metro city that boosts of a progressive medical history. Situated in South Mumbai is the Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Centre, the medical center of India's biggest metropolis. Founded over five decades ago, in 1952, The Bombay Hospital was the result of the gigantic philanthropy displayed by Shri Rameshwardas Birla, Chairman of the Bombay Hospital Trust.

A medical college is a tertiary educational institution that educates students in the discipline of medical Science. Under the Indian educational system, admission to medical colleges is through a highly competitive examination conducted either by the central government or the concerned state board. The numbers of student applicants go far beyond the number of students selected.

The degree awarded is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). This undergraduate program consists of nine semesters, followed by one-year internship.

Additional Postgraduate qualifications such as M.D or M.S can also be followed subsequently. The medical education and its qualifications governed by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Eligibility of candidates for the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MH-CET)

For MBBS Courses:

• The candidate must be an Indian National. The candidate must have passed SSC or equivalent examination from Maharashtra.
  
  
• The candidate, at the time of admission, must have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate or equivalent examination in one and same attempt from an institution situated in the state of Maharashtra with following subjects: English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).  A candidate belonging to the open category must have obtained not less than 50%. Marks in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) takentogether at the HSC or equivalent examination.
  
  
• A candidate belonging to backward classes (only from Maharashtra) must have obtained not less than 40% marks in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) taken together at the HSC or equivalent examination.

Duration of the course is 4 1/2 years divided into 9 semesters of 6 months each.

Eligibility for MD/MS

There are different elgibility requirements, if:

• You have passed MBBS from a recognized medical college in Maharashtra.
• You have passed MBBS from a recognized medical college outside Maharashtra.
