Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai is an autonomous Institute under the the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India. It was inaugurated by Sir John Colville, Governor of Bombay in 1945. In Bombay the Institute was housed at Kenilworth, a bungalow on Pedder Road.

It is located at Navy Nagar, Colaba, Mumbai. TIFR's new campus in Colaba was designed by Chicago-based architect Helmuth Bartsch.  The Institute is working in areas of basic sciences encompassing most fields in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics.

In 1949, as the Institute grew, it found its second home at the Old Yacht Club Building (former home of Royal Bombay Yacht Club) near Gateway of India. The Cosmic Ray Group was the first to start functioning. The Nuclear Emulsion and the Electron Magnetism Group started in 1953. Work in Computer Science and Technology in 1954, and the first pilot machine became operational in 1956. The full scale machine, later named the TIFRAC was commissioned in 1960. In 1957, India's first digital computer, TIFRAC was built in TIFR.  In 1970, TIFR started research in radio astronomy with the setting up of the Ooty Radio Telescope.

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a pioneer in the field of research in Science education in India. There are at present about 400 scientists in the Institute working in various disciplines grouped into three major schools: the School of Mathematics, the School of Natural Sciences and the School of Technology and Computer Sciences.

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is a National Centre of TIFR which conducts entrance examination every year for Ph.D qualification.
