Dentistry is the art and science of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions, diseases and disorders of the oral cavity and its associated structures as it relates to human being.

It is said that the 17th century French physician Pierre Fauchard started dentistry science as we know it today; hence he was named the father of modern dentistry.
The Dental Council of India (DCI) founded by the government of India in 1949 is a statutory body of the government.
A dentist is qualified to practice dentistry after graduating with a degree (BDS) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DMD).
Eligibility for the candidature is person should have passed 10 + 2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50 marks are eligible for admission in the Bachelor of Dental Science(BDS) course. The All India Pre- Medical or Pre Dental Entrance examination conducted by CBSE is common for both the MBBS and the Bachelor of Dental Sciences (BDS).
The candidate willing to be a dentist must have patience, stamina to work hard for long periods, good health, cool temperament, strong interpersonal skills, concentration power, manual dexterity and accuracy and a keen eye for details.
