Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai was founded in the year 1987. The IGIDR is an advanced research institute established by the Reserve Bank of India for carrying out research on development issues from multi-disciplinary points of views. The Institute was recognized as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act and it has the highest National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) rating of A++ (under the old methodology) given to Indian academic institutions. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is an advanced research institute established by the Reserve Bank of India for carrying out research on development issues from a multi-disciplinary point of views.

Starting as a purely research institution, the Institute quickly developed into a full-fledged teaching cum research institution. In 1990, it launched a Ph.D. program in the field of development studies. In 1995 an M. Phil programme was also initiated. These programmes groom analysts with diverse disciplinary background who can address issues of economics, energy and environment policies.

IGIDR has a placement cell that coordinates the placement process on campus and ensures a smooth process guided by a given set of rules and principles. IGIDR has seen 100% placement of its students. The Cell invites corporate firms, banks, research organizations, government institutions and non-government institutions to be a part of the Placement Process at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research.
