The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work

In 1944, the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was recognized as a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.

Since its inception in 1936, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences has never limited itself to the mandate of a conventional university; rather, it has worked for the promotion of sustainable, equitable and participatory development, social welfare and social justice.

The two Mumbai Campuses of TISS the Main Campus and the Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus Annexe are both located in Deonar in the North-East Section of Greater Mumbai. The Main Campus spans over an area of 10 acres approximately.

The Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus Annexe, is located off V.N. Purav Marg.The Naoroji Campus Annexe is next to the BARC Hospital Gate on Deonar Farms Road. This Campus of 11.05 acres presently houses the School of Management and Labour Studies and the Jamsetji Tata Centre for Disaster Management.

The TISS is well equipped with the latest technologies. All teaching programmes conducted by TISS are aimed at the benefit of the society and for social upliftment of the weaker sections of the society. The TISS has a 100% placement record across all its courses.
