International Institute for population Sciences (IIPS) Mumbai was established in the year 1956 jointly by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, United Nations, the Government of India. It was declared as a Deemed University in 1985.The institute is an autonomous body under the administrative supervision of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It is recognized but not funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
IIPS List of Courses
1. Master of Population Studies (MPS)/ Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Population Studies
This programme is designed to inculcate fundamentals of population studies and
interface of population with other disciplines of social science, development and public
policy. Problems of youth and adolescence, reproductive health and gender issues are
given special attention.
Eligibility:
Applicants should hold a Master Degree in Economics, Sociology, Psychology,
Anthropology, Geography, Social Work, Population Studies, Mathematics or Statistics
from a recognized University. Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination and
expecting results by June this year can also apply for admission. The Institute selects students through a written admission test followed by a personal interview. The weighed score of qualifying examination, admission test and personal interview is the basis of selection on merit. The duration of MPS course is one year, and the medium of instruction is English.
2. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Population Studies
The doctoral programme is designed to prepare students for professional leadership in the field of population well as for pursuing academic career.
Eligibility:
Candidates having Master's or M.Phil. degree in Population Studies of recognised university with at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade (B+); and/or Candidates who have passed National Educational Testing (NET) in Population Studies conducted by the University Grants Commission are eligible of Ph.D. admission. However, in case of those who do not have Masters degree in Population Studies will have to undergo one year Masters degree Programme in Population Studies at the Institute. Candidates will be short-listed for presentation of research proposal and interview on the basis of their past academic records. Selection of candidates for the course will be made on the basis of candidates past academic records, presentation of research proposal and personal interview. Only short-listed candidates will be called for the presentation and interview. The Institute shall not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the presentation and interview. Reservation for Scheduled Castes /Scheduled Tribes candidates will be considered as per the UGC norms.
3. Diploma in Health Promotion Education (DHPE)
This course is offered by the Family Welfare Training and Research Centre (FWTRC), Mumbai, affiliated to IIPS
4. Short Term Courses
The Institute offers short-term training of in-service professionals from India and neighboring countries, which are of one- to three-week duration.
