University of Mumbai erstwhile University of Bombay started in 1857 is a historic institution and hence not merely a campus to attend classes but also a site worth seeing. Carrying more than 150 years of history with it, the University of Mumbai offers various programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level. Whole range of subjects under humanities, sciences, commerce, engineering, law, medicine, etc are taught. The University also offers various job oriented certificates and diploma programs.

The library is automated and has access to hundreds of e journals and periodicals through subscriptions. Besides central library, various university departments have their own library. The technology and applied research journals and books of the University of Mumbai are kept at various other libraries including those at MUICT, TIFR, JBIMS & Tata Memorial Hospital.
All faculties of University of Mumbai engage in research works. The University of Mumbai has received Five Stat status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the past 5 years the demand for admission into University of Mumbai rose 104% among undergraduate students, 112% among postgraduate students and 147% among admission takers in distance learning programs. The University of Mumbai is affiliating body to most of the research institutes situated in Mumbai and surrounding areas.
The University of Mumbai also has shown promise at national and international level. 12 Department / sections of University of Mumbai are recognized under various national programs, like SAP / CAS / DRS /DSA / COSIST / FIST. Every year about 20 teachers from University of Mumbai visits abroad for academic purposes. In past 5 years, 18 National / International awards are won by teachers of the University. Recently, the University has started 10 Self Supporting programs. The University also offers various scholarships to meritorious and needy students.
